Tips for Outfit Coordination in Family Photos, read more here

What to wear for your family session?

Choosing what to wear for a family photo shoot can be a difficult issue at times. Your goal is to locate clothes that coordinate without seeming too matchy-matchy, while also representing each family member's own personality. Fortunately, with enough thinking and planning, you can create a unified and attractive design for your family photographs. Here are some pointers to help you:

1. Select a Colour Scheme

Choosing a colour palette is a great place to start. It doesn't have to be the same colour for everyone; instead, choose 2-3 main colours and then bring in some neutral tones. Complementary colours (those opposite each other on the colour wheel) can produce a bright impact, whilst analogous colours (those next to each other on the colour wheel) produce a more harmonious appearance. Colour schemes can also be inspired by the season or place.

2. Combine patterns and solids

While pure colours can make a powerful statement and frequently photograph well, patterns should not be avoided. They can add texture and intrigue to your family images. The crucial word here is balance. If one individual wears a pattern, attempt to outfit the rest in solid colours that complement the design's tones. Just keep in mind that patterns that are excessively loud or bold can be distracting. And we want the perfect balance for your family images.

3. Consider the Location

When planning your clothing for the family photo shoot, keep the backdrop of your images in mind. If the environment is rich in colour and design, you may wish to adhere to more neutral tones. On the other hand, a splash of colour might bring your images to life if the scene of the family photo shoot is quite simple or monotonous

4. Accessorise and layer

Adding layers and accessories to your family photoshoot can add depth and interest to your images. Consider scarves, belts, hats, jewellery, or even a fashionable jacket for the family members. These pieces can add a splash of colour or a pattern without overwhelming the image. They can also be easily added and removed to create varied looks throughout the family photoshoot.

5. Think about your comfort and mobility.

It is critical that everyone feels at ease and is able to move freely during the photo shoot. Clothing that is too tight or too uncomfortable might cause unpleasant looks and awkward stances. Make sure children's costumes are appropriate for play and movement, and consider how your garments will feel in various stances or while sitting on the ground.

6. Display Your Family's Personality

Your family photos should show your family's personality. Don't feel obligated to follow a particular style or trend. If your family enjoys dressing up, opt for a more formal design. If you like something more casual, pants and attractive t-shirts are a good option. The idea is to appear similar to yourself, but little more polished.

7. Plan ahead of time

Last but not least, organise your outfits ahead of time for the family images. This will allow you to shop for new pieces if necessary, conduct a trial run, and ensure that everything is clean and pressed for the day of the shoot.

Remember that, while these suggestions are meant to help, they are not absolutes. The most crucial aspect of your family photos is that they capture your love and relationship as a family. So, be yourself, have fun, and trust your photographer to capture lovely moments in your family images.

8. How many outfits are too many outfits?

When it comes to family pictures, quality trumps number. One or two beautiful clothes per person are ideal - trust me, you don't want to turn your photo shoot into a runway display (unless you want to, in which case, go for it!).

I hope this helped you with what to wear for your family session! If not, feel free to get in touch and I will help you.
